How well will your home allow you to live and age in place? Below are some questions that can be helpful to ask:

  • Is there at least one step free entrance to your home?
  • Is there a bedroom, a full bathroom and a kitchen on the main level?
  • Are the interior doorways all at least 36″ wide?
  • Can you easily reach all regularly used items in your kitchen?
  • Are there secure handrails on both sides of all steps and stairs?
  • Is there good lighting in the home, especially on all steps and stairs?
  • Do you have multiple throw rugs around the house?
  • Do you have a shower with a step free entry?
  • Do you have non-slip strips or a rubber mat in your shower or tub?
  • Do you have any grab bars in or around the shower or tub?
  • Do you have an easily accessible telephone in all areas of the home?
  • Do you have any narrow or awkward turns into any area of the home?
  • Are your kitchen and bathroom faucets easy to operate?
  • Is your microwave within easy reach?
  • Are there any single steps or high doorway thresholds in the home?
  • Are the curtains and blinds easy to operate?
  • Are any areas of the home crowded with furniture?
  • Is it easy to sit and stand from the easy chairs and/or couch?
  • Is there room to sit at your bathroom sink, and can you see in the mirror if you are sitting?
  • Do you feel comfortable, safe, and independent in your home?
